thanks! do you have any reccomendations as far as an entry level dslr? i was thinking about the t3i

Any DSLR will be a good tool for you. The common advice is to stick with Canon or Nikon because they have the largest selection of accessories. The T3i would be fine, just keep in mind the issue that the O.P. was having...you won't get that really shallow DOF with the 'kit' lens that comes with these cameras.

I second what Mike said.
And as for the shallow DOF-he's right, but you will also be able to get shallow DOF easier than on your point and shoot-Jut not EASY.
