Pierre, this was in what is called the White Desert, part of the Western Desert in Egypt close by to Libya. The Western Desert is very well known for it's black/white desert. Both were an ocean bed and the black part is a result of volcanic lava extinguished by water and the white part you can find fossilized remains of corals, whales, etc. The white desert in specific is BREATHTAKING...the rock formations are incredible and I actually walked inside a fossilized whale. Definitely a great place to visit or to even read about and see pictures online
