I am thinking of gettinig a 50 mm for my Digital Rebel....there are 2 50 mm lenses one is 1.4 and one is 1.8. Would that .4 really make much of a difference? Obviously I'm still working out the details....

The cheif advantages of the 1.4 are Build Quality (from what I hear the Canon 50 f/1.8 is optically great but built like crap) and smoother bokeh. The extra half stop of speed doesn't make that terribly much difference, but the difference in Depth of Field and Bokeh are important to some people.

The 50mm f1.8 is a good lens.... one of the best bang for the buck. At under 100 bucks there is no reason anyone serious about photography shouldn't have one in their bag.

The 50mm f1.4 is a great lens! Bokeh (more aperture blades).. build quality.. are the key improvements.

On a budget?... get the 1.8.... Deep budget? get the 1.4

No budget? well.. there's a new 50mm L out there too.
