Diffusers for plants

In the book Extreme Close up Photography and Focus Stacking, Julian Cremona suggests using polystyrene boxes to put around plants to get better plants
E.g. something

He says that they can be got hold easily from greengrocers but I have never seen them. Has anyone else got of them?
The problem with these, is that they are quite bulky, has anyone got a better idea?

If it is simply using the boxes to form a white background/sides then chances are anything white will do. Bedsheets, flat trays, thick card etc... Those boxes were probably what he had around his garden (you can get them from garden retailers and also fish often come in such boxes these days - though if they come with fish then they'll have a strong fishy smell to them).

Basically anything white and ideally of the same shade of white (ergo use the same items)
