Distortion

Crop from an image shot with an ultra-wide angle lens (10mm in this case). You can do something similar with the distortion filter in CS.

Wide angle lenses will give that effect. It is called barrel distortion. There is also a pretty extreme angle in the first shot (look at the horizon) so I am sure that has added to the distortion you are seeing.

Wide angle lens and point the camera upwards. If the camera is levelled with the ground it won't work.

You may obtain the ame effect also with the wide side of a kit lens. This one is taken with Canon 18-55IS at 18mm. More than you "may", you do obtain (willing or not). However, as far as I know, this is not called barrel distortion (that gives convex curved lines on borders). (picture not yet edited)

Wow OP... that 2nd link you put up has some of the coolest photos I've ever seen.

A lot of them are square are super-detailed... makes me think they were taken on some kind of medium format with a wide lens. Could be wrong..

wish i could take a picture like that

I know these photos blew me away too. Definitely a style that catches the eye. Would love to learn his technique.

I really liked the OP 2nd link. I thought those were some great shots.
