DIY textured backdrop ideas

I have an old white sheet I don't need and am thinking to try something creative with it and make a textured rollable backdrop. I want something pretty grungy but also versatile so am thinking to go with a rusty metal or some other kind of dirty effect. Any suggestions? Was thinking to dilute some brown/black paint to dirty up the sheet with different shades of brown, maybe add a few scratches to it somehow. Or my girlfriend suggested just using instant coffee because that stuff definitely stains like hell...

Has anyone tried anything like this? How did it work out?

How about tie-dying? I would hesitate to use paint, because my experience with paint on sheets (having used them as drop-cloths when painting my house) is that it will often flake off. Coffee would work, but I don't know that it would as grungy as you want.
