Does the D40 has the capacity to shoot a wedding event?

Let's say if you hand a professional photographer a D40 body, 50mm lens and kit lens, would the camera do the job?

might want to have one telephoto lens. Not really sure how "important" they are, but from what I have heard, a lot of the wedding photographers I know use telephoto lenses mainly for outdoor weddings.

isn't telephoto lens just add ons to make 2x zoom wide angle?

no... we are talking DSLR, right?

There is no "2x zoom" in a DSLR. your 55-200 lens is a "telephoto" lens. and they aren't add ons. They are their own lenses.

Are you the one shooting the wedding, and are you shooting the wedding by yourself?

Subject to approval by whom? Someone easily satisfied? or a consumate Pro?

It can be done but likely the results will be less-than-stellar.

You can do it on a D40, but it's gonna be rough compared to what current tools can do.

You should know, you've got a telephoto. That's what the 55-200 is.

Let's say if you give a professional race car driver a Geo Metro with a turbo and a fart can, can they race?

Sure, but they're not going to win.

If you're hell-bent on doing this and you live in Sydney, at least do yourself a favor and rent a D700 and 24-70. That way when you need night-vision you can AF with the 50mm f/1.8 and not have to stand 40 feet back to get anything besides head and shoulders.

This has got to be a joke! Are you serious man? You don't know your own gear when you're asking what a telephoto zoom lens is.
I hope it's been mentioned already but you will probably need a fast telephoto zoom lens, which means: Fast as in, an f/2.8 lens for example, the nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8. Very expensive but it's ideal. cheaper version go for a sigma 70-200 2.8. Also I have almost the same body as you and do you know anythign about it? When you ask does it have the capacity for it? Do you not have an SD card? Because that's how much capacity my camera has 8GB of it. Learn your setup and your hobby before you mess around with somebodies photos. Especially WEDDING PICTURES!
