I very much don't like the idea of a "zoom lens", while for many photographers magnification is a primary motivation for using telephoto lenses, I think this approach of using a longer lens to simply "get in closer" undermines proper understanding of how focal length affects the image and overall composition.

In my opinion, a so-called 'zoom lens' should be seen first as variable focal length before variable magnification in order to "zoom in" on the subject.

In other words. Get closer. If the results are too distorted, consider a longer focal length prime.
