hope this is in the right section. anyway, i currently have a nikon d40 with the stock lens. i know little about photography, but i have realized that this is not the exact camera i want. can anyone make some recommendations for the best thing i could get in the $350-500 range? im looking for a non-dslr that is fairly portable and high quality HD video. thank you for your help!

I recently bought a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS for $420, and the video quality is amazing. I haven't used it that much for video, so I don't know how good the range of sound quality is, but it's been great so far. It shoots in 720p, but if you want 1080, I'd try the Nikon Coolpix 100 - it's about $400.

Look into HD video cameras, I hear they take awesome movies.

I'll second the Powershot recommendation. Canon's point & shoots do a LOT in a pretty small package.

And mrpink, you post a lot of unhelpful, sarcastic responses. We're here to help each other and get better, not score cheapshots. Thanks.

He said he was looking for a non-dslr that is fairly portable. Why would you reccomend anything other than a HD video camera? He said nothing about wanting stills, let alone quaility stills. I think you are being the one who is unhelpful. p!nK

I have a S95. I would not say the HD video is "high quaility" at all. Decent? Yeah. And that used S95 is a good deal for anyone wanting a nice pocket shooter. p!nK
