~ Drenched ~ I observed this American Robin perched precariously on a steel rail just after a torrential downpour accompanied by flashes of lightening. The water soaked songbird had little trouble flying despite the wetting of its feathers.

Mike,
Not exactly, more like water resistant. Birds have oil glands and continually preen in keeping the feathers resistant to the effects of water. I have personally witnessed times when during periods of excessively harsh and elongated periods of rain, where birds have trouble taking flight.
