but alas...my poor camera got a bit more water than he should have.

I was shooting off to the right and I heard a loud rumbling swelling sound to the left. I decided to get really close to the ledge to get the shot I wanted.

Once I heard the comotion..instead of running away...I framed up and started snapping photos. Imagine that.

after the last pic you see I quickly turned, shutting off camera with cat-like ninja reflexes as I turned, and coverd it up. Water soaking me head to toe...and the camera got more wet than I'd like. I will say though, there was not one water drop on the lens....lol. But the body got wet...even though the 7D is weather sealed, it is not wave-sealed. My directional stick is now not working. I am hoping it will start working again later one.....we'll see.

Here is the series. I was using my 10-22, so if you have one, you know that my foot is pretty much right at the bottom of the image where that little bit of ledge is...so um yeah....I was a bit too close. lol.



Looks peaceful at first snap...but trust me, trouble is brewing down there. It's about a ten foot drop a foot away from me.

At first wave smash I was thinking "this is going to be great" but I didn't notice the continuing swell down below....

Cool wave...still excited I'm up close getting personal wave attention.....

Rapid fire 8 fps flying off...so pretty much same shot as last only more wave splatter.....and yeah...I'm still standing there, finger on the shutter....

Still firing....getting cool waves...not noticing the rise below.....

Very loud noise....other waves disappear...and my last click was this wonderful wave coming right for me....yup....pretty much said "chit...I'm gonna get wet" evasive maneuvers.....

Can't really tell on my face...but I'm soaking wet...water dripping off my face....everything soaked....except my lens. It was bone dry. Can't say the same for me and the back of the camera body though. :-(

all that happened in a matter of say 3-4 seconds. the time between the cool shot of pic 5 and the ugly wave saying hello in pic 6 was microseconds.

Well, at least, you didn't go swimming. That seems to happen from time to time. There was a man lost when a rogue wave shot over the rocks at Peggy's Cove (Nova Scotia) and the back flow pulled him in. I seem to recall it happening 6 months ago in fall. Have you considered a dry suit for such "exploration"?

I had my makeshift cover for the camera that I made out of trash bags. I used it while it was raining, but put it away when the rain went away. Hindsight being what it is....yeah...shoulda kept it on. lol

I could kinda tell from those swells (before reading the text) you were gonna get wet. They were pretty big, and you were pretty close.

As far as the camera is concerned, I'd suggest removing the battery, sticking the body in a Ziploc bag full of rice, and let it sit for 24-48 hours. The rice is good for absorbing internal moisture, I've had some success with it.

As far as rain covers go, I got these on the cheap and they're actually really good thing to keep in the camera bag for "iffy" situations like this.

I was obviously ill prepared. Prepared enough for rain..but not waves.

I went to the truck and stripped and cleaned her up. She works fine, mines the directional joystick. I am guessing something shorted...I hope not, but we'll see. Good thing I had it on center point, changed it prior to some shots beforehand.

Gonna get some rice tomorrow and let her sit and see. No stores were open to get some tonight. Small town B.S.

I know right? I mean a wave crashing right in front of you...while equipped with an Ultra-wide lens....what a great idea!

....except that wave has to go somewhere.....
