Drummer in action (First try with Sigma 35mm f/1.4)

Hi guys,


My drummer asked if I could shoot some shots of him during rehearsal for his sponsors to use, I was pretty happy with how these came out since we rehearse in a cramped, dark basement and I was also trying to play as much as possible! I mainly used a borrowed Sigma 35/1.4 which performed amazingly even wide-open. My 50/1.2L also came out for a while. All are shot with available light.

I like the first the best, especially the starburst of light you've caught reflecting off the drum rim. Nice work.

So try a slower shutter speed, and rear shutter flash sync... get those sticks some blur, bring the images alive!

I agree with Charlie on the longer shutter speed, but for some reason I really like the last one. Just a little cleanup in the bottom right corner and it's solid.

And now that I look at it a little more, a little suggestive. Can you say piercings?

Thanks for the comments chaps. Unfortunately Matt's a pretty animated drummer - going much slower than 1/100th results in him just looking blurry, which isn't ideal for a promo shot. There's a little bit of stick blur in a few of the frames in the Flickr set, but they weren't my favourites:

I'd be interested to hear any other comments. Do you guys prefer the motion blur?
