DSLR and Lenses for first purchase

Hey Guys,

My friend and I have been shooting various film projects ranging from weddings, to off-road and sports films. We also have been doing pictures for these. Up until now we have been shooting with a Sony HVR-A1U, and the pictures on my family's Nikon D60. My buddy is investing in a new computer, and I decided to step up and get a new Camera. I was thinking about getting the Canon T4i from BH Canon EOS Rebel T4i Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens & Basic as well as a 50mm Prime Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens 2514A002 B&H Photo Video . This camera would be for primarily Video, but I would love to be able to snap pictures when needed.Would this be a good setup to start with? Or should I look into other options.

I am new to the forums but from what I have been reading during my research for my camera purchase many people find the Sony SLT's better for video then the Canons with pretty good performance for shooting. The big upside is unlike a DSLR the mirror doesn't have to raise to capture photos or video and allows you to observe your photos/recordings through the viewfinder. Google search T4i vs. A57 and see what is out there I found the results pretty interesting as I am considering sending back my T3i in favor of the A57.

That Sony looks like quite a good camera! The only downfall in my opinion, is that it's not a Canon or Nikon. As amateur and brand loyal as that sounds, I have a reason for it haha.

I want to invest in quality lenses, and once I have more money down the road (1-2 years) pick up a new EOS 5D Mark whatever they are at by that time. By purchasing a T4I and compatible lenses, I would still be able to use those lenses when I purchase a better camera, and won't have to start from scratch. At least I think so. I'm still pretty new to this as well, and am really looking forward to learning!

Edit: Although not currently supported on the T4i, Magic Lantern will most likely gain compatibility over the next few months, and the features on that look amazing!

If you are planning to go to a mark whatever just make sure you buy EF glass and not EF-S as you can't use the -s lenses on full frame sensors.

Otherwise you are dead on about the buying into a system. One point my mentor was explaining to be when I asked about the brand was sometimes the best brand is the one your friends shoot as it allows you to try new glass and get more assistance down the road. Given that isn't the only reason to buy into a system but it definitely will make future purchase decisions easier and make it easier for people to help you.

My few friends that have given me advice all shoot on Canon's as well, they all have said the same thing. Buy good lenses, they outlast the body. So with that in mind, I decided to go ahead and pick up the T4i, anxiously awaiting it in the mail now.
