I really like the first, assuming the heavy editing was to get a softer, more romantic look.
Perhaps a little roomy.
The second and third are a bit chaotic for my taste.

you got it. it was fro effect. I wanted this for a large print, and the softer look turned out to be the most pleasing enlargement.

weren't you the one giving me a hard time when I said I was switching to Nikon from my 6D for better autofocus?

yes, you told me that I was chasing marketing hype and that I needed to go talk to "real" wildlife photographers. Just nice to put some photos to your name

ah, forgot about that. DO NOT use these as representative. These are handheld 400mm shots. look at some on the web page below 'Birds & Critters' I/we do not photograph for sale. Mostly for ID, but when we 'hit' they are good. All the B&C photos are handheld, or monopod. And all small birds are heavily cropped. I/we almost never use the AI servo mode for focus because these are candids, and the flight is ...and flight is only part of the sequence, a compromise. Generall do set for a rapid frame rate though. Having said that though we have found that 10fps has not much advantage over 5fps at our skill level. I would stand by the advice I had forgotten I gave....hey, I'm old, gimmeee a break! lol

My advice is based upon watching some top notch bird pros, and noting their equip. I live in the middle of one of the hottest birding areas in the world. The Spring migration across the Gulf centers about 30 miles from my house and birders and pros almost outnumber birds at those times. so lots of people/pros to watch.
and never, never forget it is the GLASS that makes the biggest difference.
