Dyke March 2011

Okay, I guess my graphic design sensibilities don't translate well into photography. I always try to have some negative space in an image so that it doesn't look like it is being crammed into the frame. To me, it's not wasted space; it's breathing room, it gives context to where the subject is. At least that's how I was taught design; how to please the eye.

The subject has to have some relationship to the negative space.
Negative space balances something, it just doesn't sit there.

Cropped, and I popped their faces just a TAD in post to bring them out a bit more.

#2 seems a bit green in the skin tones, but I like the sharp focus overall of these. There is an element of storytelling missing from these, in that I would have no idea what was going on here (or what the event was) if you hadn't said. But, that said, I don't dislike these at all, I think you have some overall very decent shots.

Eh, they aren't that good. You clipped the little boys hand and didn't make the best use of the lighting.

I really don't get anything from these images; I've looked at them carefully and repeatedly, and I still don't think that I would know what was going on if you hadn't posted it. When you're shooting any sort of event, the most important aspect, IMO, is to capture the story behind the event.

Okay, maybe the title Afternoon in the Park would be more appropriate. Because that's basically all that it was. It was coincidentally Dyke March, there were a few poets and musicians but mostly families hanging around.

It should and I agree with what you say. Keep in mind though that it is supposed to help the subject, not detract from it. TBH, most of the time when someone calls for a tighter crop on the forum, I don't get it. As if every shot should be a product shot for a catalog.

In photography, unlike in design, you can't always control what is in that negative space so you have to watch that and control it through framing.

My main problem though is as a former PJ. Where's the story? You're telling me they are dykes so I assume they are but, with no title, it would look like any event in a park. Maybe a company picnic... Also, Dyke March tends to make me expect a crowd and I don't see one here.

Best two places I have found to shoot dykes are 1/ the SF San Patrick's Day Parade which used to have a group called "Dykes on Wheels" that was quite impressive, and 2/ would be the "Rolling Thunder" event in DC. Big dykes on big two-wheelers on the beltway with tatas flapping in the wind make for some wonderful images :)
