I was a member for a number of years, although not a frequent poster, but I could not login this time without signing up again. Has my previous history been lost?

I'm sorry! It's quite possible that your old account was deactivated, depending on how much time passed, because the site owners changed forum software platforms. Otherwise, you likely would have been prompted just by email to update your password, not create a new account.
