You could recycle your ink cartridges rather than throwing them out. Some places will actually re-fill your cartridges...but I'm not sure about the quality for photo printing. It's probably OK for most people's general color printing though.

Having your ink cartridges refilled is an awful fast way to ruin your printer. Refilled cartridges can cause a print head to go bad very fast because oftentimes you are refilling with ink that was not made for that print head. Some printers (Canon), have separate heads that you can buy and replace, but they aren't what I'd consider cheap. For photographic purposes, I honestly don't know if Eco-Friendly exists...

Gum bichromate, carbon transfer, anthotype.
