Eggs: Playing with Tones: C&C welcome

I wanted to play with tones in B&W so I picked whiite. I have a white table cloth, white bowl, white eggs and a white background. Except for the background, I wanted to maintain detail thoughout. I ended up with a few pixels weighing in at 255 in the highlight at the rim of the bowl, and a few at 0 in the deepest shadow

I like the tones you did get with the eggs and the bowl. The fact that they are different whites helps to accentuate the white eggs. The reflection on the bowl is a little distracting though. the gray background was perfect for this shot, black would have disrupted the good shadows you got on the eggs.

The composition is a little odd, it feels very top-heavy to me. The reflection on the bowl isn't quite there either. It's an honest reflection, but the white reflecting in white makes it look kind of ambiguous as if the glaze on the bowl changed at that point. I think pushing the loca, contrast in the reflection could clarify this a bit. Top-heavy? I dunno, but I'd frame much looser and let it breathe, see what happens. I see that you want all that material in there, and so you're kinda stuck with the eggs at the top.

As a technical exercise, you did a fantastic job. Well executed!

Thanks Swashburn and amolitor. With your comments, I'll consider this a success as it was really just done as an experiment and practice with PP

You did well on both but I like the first better.

I keep looking at both images and both seem a bit soft on the focus...you have a white background, foreground and simple lighting...so why not go for a little more DoF.

Thanks CB, I agree. There's something not right, although I don't think it's DOF. I'm not near my NEF file, but I think it was ISO 200, f16, 2.2 seconds, focused on the ridge of the top egg.

I need to check out the glass tonight. This was taken with my 55 Macro-Nikkor. I just took off the caps and gave it a shot of air the other day for the brown egg photo. I haven't used it in years.
There's an odd halo around the highlighted tablecloth, which to me looks like there might be something going on with the glass.

Another thing that is very disappointing is the grain. This is ISO 200 which looks more like 400 film. I do realize it's an older camera but... it can't hold it's own at 200?

Try placing a vertical, detailed object about dead center of the two eggs and focus on that, remove and shoot. I find it quite difficult to shoot rounded objects and get a clear focusing point. but, as you noted, it could also be your glass.
