Hello again,
I've been saving up for a second hand 80-200mm f/2.8 all summer. Everywhere I browse on the internet I HEAR that you can get a push-pull for around $400-500 and a two-ring for under $900. I primarily use Amazon but I see push-pulls sell for $950 there! Am I just not looking in the right places or are the values I've heard of simply not true?

On a separate, but related note, I've seen AF 300mm f/4s go for less than $500 on ebay, which seems like a lot of lens for that price. Would that lens even come close to what the 2.8 zoom can offer? (in terms of a general use telephoto)

Keep your eye on Craig's List - the 300mm f4 is an excellent lens, and optically will out-perform the 80-200, BUT the 80-200 is far more versatile.

Asking price and selling price are often 2 different numbers when dealing with private sellers.

Don't know what kind of condition you're looking for but here 1986G Nikon 80-200 2.8 Ed Af-d W/bracket *77 is one that is right at $900 in decent shape.

eBay has the best deals. I sold a MINT 80-200mm af-d push pull there for $500 (with case, also mint). I've also sold rougher, but usable versions of this lens for as little as $275. Heck, I even bought an af-s 80-200mm f2.8 on ebay for $425 (paid $800 for a mint f5 with this lens and sold the camera for $375). These are all awesome lenses, the push-pulls are bargains, and the focus speed doesn't really bother you unless your a sports or wildlife photographer.
