Took an hours worth of time to shoot this lovely couple the other day @ SF. Critiques welcomed ( I know there's quite a lot that I am posting, would appreciate it if you can say something about one or two of these shots)

Your pictures kill my app. When I go to scroll through them the app shuts down. Are they full sized?

1,2,3,4,8,10,11 all look nice. #1 is VERY clever, and gives away its location in a charming, understated manner. I love that concept. #8, looking up the masonry, is a clever vantage point. #10 is another clever environmental portraiture shot.

They are actually scaled down 50%. Does your app crash when you open the thread, or when you try to open the individual photos?

The photos. I've got an iPhone 5 and it slows down when I try to swipe to the next picture and never makes it to the third one.

First of all - good job!

The subtlety of the location/bridge in 1 is great.
I love the composition of 2 (I think that one is my overall favorite, I'm a huge fan of negative space!). I also think the soft colors of the background are great. Only thing that slightly bothers me would be that the horizon looks a little slanted to the right.
I also really like 4 - the DOF is lovely and it shows the engagement ring in a very nice way. Very tender moment, captured beautifully :) The shadows look a little to red/brown/orange though, I'd cool them down a tad and also probably brighten them a bit - and I'd try to get rid of the vignetting.
7 is also to my liking (again with the use of negative space lol), but I think it would benefit from (and be a stronger shot) being more symmetrical. As it is now, it's just almost there. I can't help but want them to be placed perfectly in the center of the arch. The angle seems a little off for that, maybe if you would've taken a small step to the right the background would've lined up better with them.

Overall, a very nice session!

Was it a paid shoot?

The poses work well.

In a lot of them the lighting is very 'flat', the entire scene is hazy, the couple have dark eye sockets, and do not 'pop' from the backgrounds light wise.

I was "paid" but only for the gas, didn't want to charge them since I needed couples to practice with

Yeah I do notice that lighting problem. Would a little fill light from a flash unit do the trick?

Yes.

Light from a speedlight and an umbrella on a light stand would be even better.
Better still is using a speedlight/umbrella as the main light source so the ambient light exposure can be made darker than the exposure from the speedlight/umbrella.
Outside that usually means being able to do high speed sync flash (Canon - HSS, Nikon - Auto-FP).
That gives an ambient to flash lighting ratio that can really make the subjects 'pop'.

Nicely done, perhaps a bit flat and cold and need a bit of creative sharpening
Makes me nostalgic for SF.
Looks like several of those were shot on the Presidio.
I lived there on the Presidio for 4 years and always watch the mediocre Sean Connery movie just to see the place.

thanks for the tip!

I really like these. They seem just a little cool to me (it may be the flat lighting previously mentioned that is just resonating differently with me). Regardless, that is probably just personal preference and I'm sure the couple will be thrilled with these shots.

8 and 9 are my favorites. I would have absolutely adored #7, but the position of his hand killed it for me. I do love the point of view with that big pretty arch and architectural detail in the background though -- great composition IMO :)
