Vroom Vroom!

I took these photos of my friend in 2024, but at the time I only got around to editing just a couple of photos for various reasons. This week marks a rare instance where I am completely caught up on client galleries, so I decided to look through my storage drives to see if I could find anything to work on and came across this shoot. My friend who is pictured owns the rental studio that I took these in, which is the studio I usually rent when I do studio sessions. I didn't have to pay the rental fee this day for obvious reasons.

I didn't want to just pick a couple to share. There's a pull-back shot at the end to show my lighting setup.

I really should get into a better habit of doing pull-back shots like that to show more of the lighting setups. Not only for educational purposes, but I also think including all of that in the shot makes for an interesting photo on it's own. There's a term for it, which is "dirty frame".

No not at all! I have a particular love of Irving Penn's work, having interned for a photographer who worked with Penn for many years.
I love the realness with photos like that. Not striving for complete perfection in trade for something genuine is something I have always loved about this particular area of Penn's work. I would love to get to that point as well, but admittedly letting go of that pursuit of perfection is much harder that I ever would have imagined. One thing I have tried in moving in that direction is to try and stop retouching, a task that I have had much difficulty with. When I look at an image of mine and see things that could be improved with retouching, it's very difficult to stop myself from doing it, rather than letting it be.

It's really hard not to "go back and fix it" with things we do!

At the very least I have finally trained myself to keep retouching to a minimum. Even on these photos I did some dodging and burning on the skin, but I'd like to hope that those viewing the photos can't tell.

Some great shots here Dan and I really love the lighting and choice of gel colours - looks really good. That being said, the black and white image is strong too. On a final note, the baby prop is incredibly realistic!
