A black Domke gripper strap makes it easier and more secure to let the camera hang off of your shoulder and it looks much classier than the brightly colored STEAL ME straps that they ship with the camera. Besides, they ain't paying you to advertise for them.

What should I expect to pay to get a quality CP filter? Name brands?

I don't really remember what I paid...

I would expect to pay around $100 though (+/- $20).

I consider the best thing to pick up to start with is a Tripod.
It is one of the bet things you an have with you.
The thing to remember about tripods is you options are
Light - Sturdy - Cheap, you can only pick 2.
