This is an interesting shot. What causes the darkness above and below the sun in that area?

Did you take this from a really high elevation, etc?

I was on the second highest point in the area, only the south west sky was relatively clear the rest of the sky was overcast and foggy in ares. The darkness above the sun is start of the overcast, the darkness in the foreground is tops of mist covered hills.

that explains it all... what a wonderful place that must be to visit.

I figured the forground darkness was mist, but wasn't sure where you were at the time.
