How do you find this data on any given photo posted in the forum?

You use an EXIF reader. Either a browser add-on or a standalone application. I use the EXIF readers/writers at www.Opanda.com and www.PhotoMe.de.

Not all online photos still have the EXIF data attached.

Many people use flickr as host, in which case, you go the the photo's flickr page and selection "Actions" > "Get EXIF"

I use EXIF Viewer by Ali Ozer (aozer@mac.com) on my MacBook Pro. I keep it in the dock and just drag/drop a photo onto the icon.

Plus, not all software maintains the data when you edit an image with it.
