Exposure Bias

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out why my picture is badly under exposed.

Looking at the pictures properties, i see "Exposure Bias -3.7 Step"

What does this mean?

Yep, that would explain it. Normally that value should be 0.

I may be completely off base but here goes nothing.

If you're shooting in manual mode and you deliberately/accidentally Underexpose it based on the meter (metering to the - side of the 0) would that show as negative exposure bias?

That's just what I was thinking since EC was set at 0.

Then you did something wrong. If you are shooting at -3.7EV everything is most assuredly going to be dark. If you adjust it back to zero everything most assuredly is going to lighten up. As was mentioned:

That is almost 4 stops under exposed,

which camera are you using, it is very common for folks to get into their EC mode and not even be aware this is happening.

I'm looking now at the other pictures i shot in Auto mode, and saw the difference is the ISO, it was under exposed because the ISO was at 100, and the pictures in auto mode and the exposure was good were at 720.

This means, that Exposure compensation does not necessarily effect the picture if the ISO is not correct, Am i right?

What mode were you shooting in when you were having the issue?

in Aperture mode, and the image was dark when the ISO was set to 100.

In aperture priority mode it will adjust the shutter speed to get a good exposure but if it's too dark and your ISO isn't set to auto and you don't change it then yeah your photo will be underexposed.

Posting the picture might be helpful as well.

Oh, i forgot that i could set the ISO to Auto, this would save allot of headache's. I'm exited to try it tomorrow morning.

Not sure if your aware of this but you can also assign ISO to a button so it's easier to change. Otherwise you have to actually use the menu/LCD to change it. On the front of the camera there is a Fn button right next to the flash button. You can set that Fn button to change ISO. Go into menu - choose pencil icon (custom setting menu) and then go to f-controls. When you click ok it will bring you right to the place to assign a function to that button.

You can set that button to ISO, white balance, self-timer and some other things. ISO definitely comes in handy though. You just hold that Fn button and spin the wheel.
