External Flash

How do you know when to use an external flash and when not to? Besides the obvious, when it's dark. Do you ever use it outdoors during the day?

Also, how do you know what angle to point it at? Head on, left, right, straight up?

Any time the subject is in shadows, you might consider using 'fill' flash outside. Look up the topic 'fill flash' on strobist.com

you dont just use it outside as a fill.. sometimes you can get a really nice effect when using a flash direct on when outside..

i would suggest hitting up http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ and reading the Lighting 101 section.. its a GREAT resource for people new to lighting.

I rarely shoot without flashes any more, but most of my photography is now people photography.
