External HDD for Backups

Hi all,

So even though every external HDD i have every owned has failed, i'm looking at one to backup my photos too.

Originally i was looking at a dual drive NAS setup but it is too pricy for now and not super portable.

Thoughts, recommendations?

My strategy is to have three copies of every file.
One on my desktop hard drive
One on an external hard drive that I keep onsite (home)
One on an external hard drive that is kept off-site (my work)
I have about 4 categories of images/video so I have at least two external hard drives for each category (sometimes three drives)
... ... = about a dozen hard drives.
