faded photos

Im having problems getting full colors of my photos. I am an amateur photographer who takes pictures at night, ex: clubs. Ive watched videos, changed my settings plenty of times, but still cant get it right. My pictures looks faded or comes out grey. I do not get full colors only faded colors. Also i would like to make the people in the background look blurred and the actual person im taking the picture of stands out. I tried changing the apeture plenty of times, but the more i try the more i screw up. What am I doing wrong. please help. Example below

Fix you camera settings to increase color saturation. Shoot manual with a wide aparture for softer backgrounds. The D5000 is very capable to get what you want. What lens are you using?

If you are using the on board flash in auto modes, it is likely over exposing your photos somewhat.

Using flash adds a level of complexity to doing photography. The camera's auto modes often make inaccurate assumptions about what ids being photographed which results in inconsistent results.

So there is no 1 quick fix. You will have to learn more about the technical aspects of how to do photography.

im using nikon dx lens 18-55 mm

i use the manual mode with external flash

Your link makes sense. my image quality is set on JPEG fine. i wonder should i change it to NEF (RAW) + JPEG standard?

Mully, i changed my color saturation to vivd. colors are looking brighter. i hope this doesnt affect the other settings. Now i wonder since i changed the color sat, should i change my ISO, and shutter speed as well?

A 50 mm lens can help you with the blurred background, lighting is really important if you want to take a better quality photo

I have a D90 but it may be close ... go into your picture control settings in your menu and put it on Vivid, that should brighten up your photos some.

Two questions: Is your monitor calibrated? What colorspace are you working in?
