1st pic: kinda flat
last pic: nice moment with great lighting, but the composition, angle and the background ruined the opportunity.

What composition/ angle would you have gone for?

I would have gotten on the ground and shot up with a wide angle to take advantage of the fence and tree line's parallel lines and give the boy and his father a taller look compared to the surroundings. If that made any sense.

Shoot at roughly waist level using a 50mm.

1 is good but overexposed. you are losing the shadows that would be around the nose to give it definition. this is why people think it is flat. lower the exposure about a 1/3 to 2/3. that should be enough. maybe a little contrast. lovely blue eyes though. they really cut into you.

what type of lens do you own? i have commented on a few of your photos unknowingly now so I was interested in what you are working with here.

I like 1 and 3 most. I would add some contrast in photoshop on number 1 to bring out some of the detail in her hair.

3 is just all around awesome.

Apart from the gentleman's top in #2 (please number your photos in the future), the blacks are too black. I'm guessing they register zero. Additional light is needed. Funny thing a lot of people miss when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine. You need more cowbell.
