Fencing photography advice for beginner

Problem is you can set yourself up right in the middle.
And they move back and forth, so the focal plane from your position is going to change depending upon their position.

When I do indoor soccer I just make sure my shutter, aperture are set to what I want, then Max Auto ISO and go with it. If I lower shutter I get motion blur, increase aperture then ISO may need more (or pull from shadows in post processing).
Sometimes getting a shot with noise is better than no shot at all.

That's right, shooting from the side is not always the option. Mostly because the referee will be between you and the fencers. And as @astroNikon said, they tend to move quickly from one side to the other. Usually I observe them and figure out which one is attacking, then I camp at the one side and shoot before the referee gets in front of me ^^.

I did some photos with motion blur and other issues already, so yeah, I need to accept some noise and I use high ISO values.

I like the photo. Good job. Practice makes perfect. The heavy lettering on the guys back doesn't do you any favours.

I'm sorry but what you want is not possible under those conditions, the distance between competitors is too great without flash, I used to shoot lots of events indoors and some events we could studio flash bounced off the ceiling

I'll agree and I don't think you need to shoot at f7.1, a larger aperture would have worked in that situation
and get try to get that window light at your back!
