To be honest, I don't follow the games anymore, but I still remember when and why I decided that Galatasaray was my team. I was teaching my 8th grade class and apparently there was a big game coming up soon. Two of the students that always gave me trouble were in the back yelling, "Besiktas!" The loudest was a kid named Ozan. He was so obnoxious. I know teachers aren't supposed to say this but I didn't like him. Then they asked me which team I liked. Apparently I was supposed to agree with them (I lived on the Euro side close to Besiktas so there were a lot of black and white jerseys in my neighborhood!).

There was a little boy named Fatih who sat in the front. He got in trouble a lot, but he was a good kid. I think he had something like Attention Deficit Disorder and he got picked on a lot. I caught sight of him holding his red and yellow beads, eyes closed, whispering, "Please say Galatasaray!"

And so I threw in my lot with Fatih and his favorite team. I've never seen a face light up so brightly just for hearing the name of a football team

And not to derail your thread, let me mention that the picture is gorgeous!

Yup, I was an English teacher! The first year, I was at Ozel Yildiz Lisesi in 1.Levent. Then I taught two more years at International House down the road in Etiler, just a couple of blocks from the Akmerkez.

It was a long time ago. I left in 2001. I went to Portugal for a couple of years after that, and then came back to NY and have been teaching in a community college. Even though I haven't lived there in more than 10 years, it still feels quite present in my life. Turkey just stays in a person's blood forever

Nice gig at the university! If I'd stayed in Istanbul, that's what I would have tried to get. And the European side is so crowded, so I probably would have made my way over the bridge at some point, too. There was a time when I could tolerate noise and commotion much more easily, but it wears a person down. Oddly enough, though, just last night I was missing the sound of the ezan.

My family is Portuguese so I'm obviously biased, but you definitely need to go to Portugal!

I'd love to visit Turkey again and am sad that I haven't been able to do so in such a long time. I miss a good proper mercimek soup! I imaging things have changed a lot - they were already starting when I was there. I arrived just months after Erdogan was kicked out of office as mayor of Istanbul for reciting the Islamic poem. The metro also opened when I was there, and in my last year, I was actually commuting on it every day. Even the coffee - when I first got there, you could find Turkish coffee (sekersiz, lutfen!) and Nescafe and that was about it. It was actually the source of my first minor breakdown the day after I arrived I was so overwhelmed by everything that when a waiter in a cafe told me they only had Nescafe, I actually burst into tears! :blushing: When I left, there were actually a few coffeehouses popping up that served "filtre kahve" (my haunt was the Kahvehaus in Tunel.)

I did teach straight ESL for a couple of years after returning, but I've since moved to writing and literature. At first I taught some classes for American students and some for international students, but I've since dropped the classes for American students. The international students are better students and I'm more comfortable with a group of immigrants anyway
