Fill flash

Here is a good example of using fill flash in daylight.

Notice how dark the background is, and how dark the driver's legs are where the flash did not hit them.

Not necessarily correct, when shooting field sport there is no way of using fill flash, this is where i use sport metering

I can only see the last of your three images here, so forgive me if the other two contradict what I'm about to type. You're third image actually supports the original argument. Not critiquing other than as relevant to the discussion at hand, but the subject seems a tad underexposed and the sky is certainly blown. Metering for the sky and adding light to the subject (fill flash or reflector) would have allowed both to be properly exposed.

Now, I'm not suggesting that adding light to the subject is practical in your case, and thank you for pointing out that spot metering improved the shot over just blindly exposing.

A reflector won't always give you enough. A speed lite, under these circumstances, will.
