I've recently acquired a Cosina CT-1 Super film camera and I've found that the film advance lever doesn't lock after winding it. That means I can advance the film all the way to the end without releasing the shutter. I've already lost some exposures because I forgot that I'd already wound it. I've never seen this before; is it part of the camera's design or is there something wrong with it?

There is something wrong with it. The lever should lock until the shutter is released.

It sounds like it is in need of repairing. What you described is not correct

It's usually a busted or dislodged spring that activates a ratchet connected with the shutter that stops this. This was an entry-level camera that just may be cheaper to replace than fix. These days finding a repair person can be tricky and the fix can surpass the cost of another camera. Sadly, it's an unwelcome fact of film shooting in 2019 that many ailing inexpensive camera models are disposable.

Sadly, this camera was given to me as a replacement for another camera that would cost more to repair than the camera was worth. This is the third camera I've had in the past 6 months because the other two cameras have had problems that needed to be totally taken apart to repair. The first one was not even broken; it just has a piece of rubber stuck in something that's jamming the lever, but I would have to pay a professional $200 to dismantle it and remove the piece of rubber.

When I finish the roll of film I'll see if the pictures turned out ok. If they are alright I'll just have to live with a faulty lever until I can have it repaired or buy a new one.

The CT-1 Super uses the same K-mount lenses that fit most Pentax cameras so you could get yourself, say, a Pentax K-1000 body and still use the same lenses. The K-1000 is a much more reliable camera. Of course, you should still make sure it works before buying it. Lots of other Pentax models could also bu used.

Yes I've read that they are a really good reliable K-mount camera. I did look on ebay for one but they are out of my price range at the moment. It looks like they are in high demand.

I've read good things about the Pentax LX too, but that's even more expensive.

There is the Pentax MX as well.

And yes the K1000 is a very reliable camera. I've had mine since 1980 and have shot 1000's of rolls through it and it still works perfectly.
