Is it OK to leave the UV filter on for all pictures? I just want to protect glass

That's kind of a personal preferance thing. Some people (me) never use UV filters, others have one for every lens and never take it off. From what I can see, image quality is about the same either way, although sometimes a UV filter can ruin a shot if the conditions are perfect (so they say).

the main downside to UV filters is glare, especially in low light or long exposures. i prefer a lens hood over a UV filter. the less glass the better...

My shots not paying rent (non-pro) - I have UV filter on all lens - exception being the 50mm f1.8 - $80 filter for a $80 lens seems silly . If you absolutely must have the best IQ, I'm guessing you will not want a filter - I do not see difference, but I do not pixel peep.

I prefer B+W 010 MRC filter - the 77mm one goes for like $80 (around there). B+W CPL are over $125 I believe.
