Can anyone please tell me the great differences between a skylight 1A fiter vs a 1B? And also, can anyone explaing what a Niko LMC-1 filter is for specifically. Finally, if I just wanted a filter to protect the lens glass, is this LMC-1 appropriate or would I want a skylight or, for example, a Hoya UV these days for an older FD Canon lens. Thanks.

Both 1A and 1B have a very slight magenta tint. 1B has a slightly darker tint than the 1A.

You do not need a filter just to protect your lens, in 50 years of photography I have never damaged a lens. There is in my opinion no point putting a $30 piece of glass in front of a $300 lens...
