After using a hand-me-down Manfrotto 3001BPRO tripod and a worn out 3265 Joystick head for nearly a year, I finally upgraded my means of support! It's been a long time coming, but better late than never. I just got a set of Vortex STX legs (made by Manfrotto) coupled with a Manfrotto 410 Jr Geared head. It's a bit heavier than my old setup, but is worth every ounce. It's rock solid, especially compared to what I've been using. I can't wait to get this thing out on some long-exposure night shots!

And of course, here's a few pics to compare old vs. new:

Yes, yes it is. I'm really loving the precision of the geared head. It's admittedly not for everyone, but it has definately given me more control than I've ever had. It came just in time, too. Yesterday I did a shoot for a real estate company, and have another one tomorrow. It makes lining everything up a snap!

The geared head is a dream for precise control and composition = the only thing that holds it back is that its not a light head! Good luck and have fun with it!

Believe me, I know what you mean about the weight of the head! The good thing is that the new legs are about the same weight as the others, so overall I'm only gaining about a pound from the entire setup. Well worth the extra weight.
