First assignment for Basic Photo course

Our first assignment for my Basic Photo course was simply "I am _______". I decided to attempt a shallow depth of field, with a pile of books & shoes in focus and myself messing around on the computer blurry in the background.

Here's what I came up with (two edits of the same shot):

Thoughts? Tips? Any ideas of what I can do better, whether it's re-shooting or re-editing? I have already edited out the white spot on the bottom of the black shoe.

Ditto- the tilted frame doesn't do this any justice.

Good idea here.

I think the image is alright. I just wouldn't have cut off parts of the books or shoes.

The DOF is also not all that shallow.

The table is kind of distracting.. and I'm definitely with Korme on this one.. I wouldn't have cut off the shoes or the books. It's an awesome idea though..very unique. I like the colors in #1 better than the second one. They seem to be a lot more vibrant and the carpet helps lead the eye to you.
