Pentax K-r arrived today! Broke it out, read most of the manual, but had to get some pictures in before dusk. Snapped about 20 and I really like this one of my puppy! (Shes chewing a piece of cardboard)

I'm LOVING aperture priority!!!

Nice! Especially for being your first shoot.

Looks like ya got the focus right, lighting looks fine....as far as cropping goes (if you were to edit this) then you might want to focus more-so on the doggy by copping out some unneeded grass.

But yeah, definately good!.

Only thing that stands out is that it is a little blue. Do you know what you had your wb set to?

Everything was set to auto except the aperature mode... Which allows me to change the F to get to cool depth of field, but automatically sets everything else by default... exposure, shutter speed, ISO, etc.... I know WB was set to auto as well.

But your saying maybe manually setting the WB would helped that a bit?

I have set white balance on a video camera before, basically, aimed it at something white and hit a "Set" button, I'll have to read my Pentax manual about its setting, but should it generally be similar? Do you keep a white index card with you for setting WB in the field?

Threw a super quick edit-blast on it, hope you don't mind.

I was about to de-noise it, but I kinda like it in this image.

Auto-WB will most generally blue things up.

I know alot of people who keep their WB set to cloudy -1 or shade -1, gives a nice orangey/goldeny/redy look to things which is more pleasing than blue (except in a few situations of course).

I know what you mean, I think it feels very rustic / nostalgic to some sense with the noise it has. I liked it too.

I actually like the shot centered. OP heres my edit.

I adjusted the white balance...added some curves and dodged his face a little. Do you have editing software?
Again... nice shot

Thanks Sabrina, that made me realize how REALLY blue it was, I have photoshop CS5. Hitting auto-tone brought everything very close to real life color. The original pic above is straight off the camera (jpeg).

(I must sound like a such a newb with auto-everything lol)

(and its a Her) :-P

Aperture priority does not automatically select your ISO :P

It must have been because you had the ISO set to auto :) It doesn't have anything to do with AP.

Rebecca, the aperture priority mode will select various camera settings (including ISO) automatically based on what I have selected for aperture, thus giving priority for my aperture setting. Understand? From what I gather, that's the point of Aperture priority over full manual, mode where one is forced to manually select things such as ISO, etc... (when one is only concerned about adjusting aperture)

I'm fairly new here, however I notice a specific lack of helpfulness in most of your posts, most of which seem are pointless sassy remarks. Is there a reason for this?

Excuse me??? If you don't like my comments then ignore me.
