First DSLR Canon or Nikon

Pentax is a dying system and you would be hard pressed to find Sony anywhere. I would say look at the m43 systems and maybe the X series

Nikon has the lead in the higher end cameras. I don't know about the entry level. Canon used to be the leader in video and that's why I shot with my 5D MKII for 4 years, but my new D750 shoots pretty amazing video and has amazing dynamic range, noise, and noise control. It just looks great. But we're talking a camera that's 3-4 times as much as what you're probably looking at.

Pentax's market share has stayed pretty constant. They're not growing, but they're not dying either. They are innovating, and produce great cameras that at least match the opposition. For those it concerns, though, they have no full-frame upgrade path (although there are rumours that it's on the way). Unfortunately they're not very good at marketing!

Sony's share is increasing - I've seen them in plenty of stores, and seen plenty of professionals (via youtube, mostly) talking about them and quite a few switching to Sony mirrorless from DSLR.

You're right though, micro four-thirds and Fuji's X-series are worth considering - though personally I have demands on a system that they wouldn't meet (at least, not as my main camera).

Pentax ...ahem Ricoh is resorting to horrible photoshop in ads, stupid colourful cameras and flashing lights on the front of a DSLR. Yes they sometimes have a usable product but why buy a brand that'll probably not survive the decade? Only people to buy Pentax are those with a ton of K mount lenses.
Sony and Fuji have great systems, I wish lenses were easier to come by.

For what it's worth, you could adapt your Canon FD lenses onto a Sony E-mount camera (e.g. the A6000 or A7). They're mirrorless rather than DSLR cameras, but highly regarded.

For that matter, Canon and Nikon aren't the *only* options ... Sony and Pentax both have reasonably good lens ranges (though Sony's looks overpriced to me - Pentax's is better value than Canikons. Plus Pentax mid-range bodies are weather sealed, if you like to shoot in the rain).
Canon lenses can AF on Sony body but from what I heard its so slow that its pretty much useless.
Did you say Sony has a good lenses range ?
They have less then mediocre lens range.
Pentax on the other hand from what I heard have a good lens range but I never personally looked into that so I just state what I heard.

MFT cameras are an option but compared to APS-C they lack in low light performance and definitely compared to full frame. I am not saying you cant get good shots in low light with MFT but the bigger sensors has advantage on that front, MFT is worth considering but just keep that in mind.

'Sometimes have a usable product' ... have you tried the K-3? Better image quality than the crop Canons, far more user-friendly than the Nikons, and much better value than either. (The only aspect I've so far noticed where it lags behind Canikon is the autofocus performance. But unless you're shooting sports or moving wildlife, the AF is perfectly adequate.)

I didn't have a ton of K-mount lenses, but thought it was worth eBaying all my Canon gear to switch across to Pentax. No regrets.

Why on earth do you think they'll 'not survive the decade' when they're innovating, and when their share of the 'interchangeable lens camera' market share hasn't changed (during a period when Canikon's market share has gone down significantly)

You get roughly same IQ on Pentax that you get on Nikon because both using Sony sensors.
I was under the impression that top of the line Pentax has a good AF system, I am surprised there.

Why Pentax might disappear in a decade ?
Well I think same reason that Canon and Nikon face, I think mirrorless is the future whether we like it or not and while Nikon and Canon probably have the financial resources to R&D into mirrorless if they want I don't know if Pentax does.
I do hope they will, Pentax makes great cameras, not for everybody but they are good, I hope to see them in business many years down the road but I guess we will know that in few years from now.

Yes; in some cases exactly the same sensors.

It's not bad at all - for general photography it's more than good enough. It's just that if your focus was sports or wildlife, Canikon have better options (the Canon 7D mark ii in particular). For anything else, portraits, landscapes, weddings, family ... the K-3's focus system is more than adequate.

Pentax is a part of Ricoh Imaging which is a large company with annual revenue of over $20 billion. I guess they can find a dollar or two for R&D, Ricoh bought Pentax for about $230 Mln and owns 100% of it.

That's good, I do hope they will find the right pocket to keep Pentax in the market.

Like Topcon, Yashica, Kyocera, contax, minolta, or even the Olympus DSLR.
History is littered with so many dead brands. Olympus understood they couldn't compete by going right against the big guys so they innovated and have succeeded.

Even formerly greats like Hasselblad and Leica are reduced to making special editions and sticking bits of wood on a Sony.

Actually I just saw an interesting review of 2014 camera market summery and they were not too optimistic about Olympus for the long term.

Fuji and Panasonic look very stable to them.
Canon and Nikon are ok for the short term but they will have to get into mirrorless if they want to stay in the market in the long term.
Sony is the most interesting player making good bodies but doesn't seem to be overly in a hurry to come out with lenses.
