First DSLR?

Hi, I am new to the world of dslr's, and want to buy one. I took a class on them so i know how they work. I would be using this for photos only. I am open to all suggestions. I would like to keep the price for the camera and one nice lens as close to $1000 as possible, but could go up to $1500 if i had to. I wouldn't prefer it though. Thanks for all help!!!!!

Don't overlook Pentax, they offer in camera shake reduction, which means you have "IS" available with all lenses. Plus it will accept any lens ever made for a Pentax camera, even screw mounts with an adapter.

what does everyone think about a canon 40d and a tamron 17-50 non vc?

actually, im going with a cannon 20d from keh.com so i can spend more money on glass. Is the tamron 17-50 the way to go? if not could someone recommend me a lens?
