First Jar of Pickles!

We got the cucumbers planted late but the vines look terrific and they're starting to produce well. It's pickle time! Going to pick now and that 2nd jar should show up later tonight.

Beautiful. Here in China, they have pickles, but it's just not the same, What I wouldn't give for some Klausen Pickles right now.

What kind of contraption is that on top of the jar? I have never seen such a thing before.

It's a trap. It releases gas from the jar generated by fermentation but prevents anything getting in. Otherwise you have to burp the jars and that requires opening the lid momentarily which let's in outside air.
