Please bear in mind I have not done this before, and this was very much a spur of the moment thing... without using a proper background or separate flashgun. Handheld.
OK for a first attempt. On the next shot I'd look to make sure that the only OOF element wasn't near the centre of the composition. It helps if the background colour complements the main subject, but given the way you describe you took the shot, you accepted what was there. If/when you use an on-camera flash try bouncing it from the side with a reflector (white card is good enough) on the other side to reduce the darkness of the shadows. I find you can do a lot with that simple set up.
