I had my first maternity session this week! Here are my favorites. I'd love to hear c&c. I was a little stressed when we had to change location 10 minutes before the shoot! But I think we still did okay ;)

Number 3 would be stronger is you did a tight crop on the two, like belly up on the mom. Would make it more intimate.

The rest are good, I would the light bloom is a bit much on the last one because you can hardly see her face.

I love the second. best image of the set imo

Thank you! I have some that cropped tighter like that.

thanks ghache, that was my favorite as well.

I dunno.

First, it's worth noting that I generally hate maternity shoots. I find them cliche at best and awkward and painful generally.

On purely technical points... The color cast seems sort of overwhelming with these. The sun right into the camera is sort of blatant and a bit much as well.

Mom looks... awkward... in almost every shot. And yeah, I get that mom is like 9 months pregnant or whatever, and that's not a time when women are looking particularly well balanced, but I don't think you got a single pose where she looked even close to comfortable.

5... why the dark thing? What's that saying? It doesn't say "happy mom maternity moment" to me, personally. This, to me says "Photographer thought it would be cool without realizing the potential impact of this particular subject in this scene."

6... what is that in the background?A bunker? That's sort of odd.

2 is probably the nicest overall, and I imagine she'll cherish that... and that one, overall I would say is not bad bordering on good. But overall, no, I don't think these are great.

manaheim thank you for your feedback :)

The color cast (haze/sunflair) was actually requested by the mom AND they were her favorite photos of the 30+ provided (she actually said to me "x image is EXACTLY what I wanted" . Personally, I prefer less sunflair (#2). (I do think the wb is off though, I'll have to adjust that)

As for the posing, idk, I just don't agree; I think she looks great. I mean I know there are small posing issues (hands/legs etc.) but to say she looks awkward is just not what I am seeing at all.

#5....its called a silhouette. I guess to some it may seem dark. I think it can be read several ways. A mom sitting in the dark (but looking out to sunlight) contemplating how she is weeks away from giving birth...to an actual human being. I mean...that is scary. I guess you have never had a baby (or a second baby) but I certainly know the worry, stress, and plain old fear of the unknown can be consuming in those last few weeks. Not only about the birth but about the complete life change that is about to happen.

#6 some sort of building I actually didn't even notice that, or the orange fence thing. Probably because I did one in b/w and was originally going to post that one but changed my mind to the color last minute. I suppose being in b/w it was way less noticeable

Yes, I know what a silhouette is.

I've never given birth, but we have two children, and you'll not likely find many people who more starkly assessed the coming doom of having a child than me, but that isn't something I'd want to look back on in pictures.

"And Emma, here you'll see a picture of your mom before she had you. It was a dark and terrifying time for us all, as commemorated here in this picture. If only we knew what we knew now. Sigh."

Anyway, whatever. I just felt it was worth mentioning that yes, I've had kids. Oh and that I knew what a silhouette was.

Idk, I guess I am different in that way. I just like that it says something, and something real. Its not a bad thing to be unsure or scared about the birth of a child. I had two homebirths for gods sakes. I was f*n scared! So for me its more powerful and I like producing moody images that are more...dark? Idk, not quite sure what the perfect word would be.

Anyway I am not saying the photo is perfect. I KNOW it could have been stronger. And I am just defending the photo because it was one of the more artistic ones I took and I really did think about it before I shot it. And I like it
