First moon shot!

You dont need a tripod for a moon shot, as its a very bright subject. The most important things are atmosphere conditions and nailing focus (not all lenses are truly focused at infinity when you focus all the way out.

in practice you need it. It is very bright, but you use long focal lengths. This cannot be done handheld ;). I agree about focus: some lens focus past infinity at the far end, so you have to step back a little. In addition, better to block mirror to avoid vibrations (e.g. focusing through Liveview). I also use a remote.
OP: if you do not have a tripod, a beanbag could be even better.

You may gain a little bit of detail by converting to b/w with the right filter (e.g. green).
