beautiful girl.. but HARSH light! You need to either learn to use fill flash, and reflectors... or shoot in shade (or make your own with diffusers). Except for the light...They are not bad, at least they are in focus, and framed reasonably... but she needs to change expression. No smiles... nothing.. ??? She looks bored....

I agree, the lighting is rather harsh. Fill light was definitely needed here. If you don't have any way to get your flash off of the camera, then try reflectors. Large pieces of white posterboard or Coroplast are cheap like borscht and make great reflectors in a pinch, as do those reflective car windshield sun-shades; of course shooting at a different time of day (early morning / evening) is always an option too. The area you chose wasn't ideal either, as it creates a 'zebra-stripe' background of bright and dark lines, which is very visually distracting, and often causes things to grow out of the subject's head. They're a good start, but there's definitely room to refine your technique!

FPS is also short for "frames per second", and well as Focal Plane Sync ( aka High Speed Sync flash) flash...anyway....the light is harsh, but I think you went the best way with it: convert it to B&W, and make the images look "light". Converting to B&W helps eliminate the weird coloration that overexposed highlights can often have in digital photos. Overall for a first shoot of this type, you did "okay". Not great, but okay. This exact kind of lighting is VERY difficult to shoot in--UNLESS you have skill with fill-in flash, or have a large source of reflected light, something BIG, like a bedsheet, stretched on a frame or between trees, to lighten up the shadows. Her outfit and accessories are a good match for this kind of outdoor location. She did well.

My sister wanted to take them all in black and white. It was an option on the camera.

Others: I didn't use any type of flash. I tried to adjust the shadows best I could. The pictures were taken in black and white, not edited later.

They were taken in black and white; it's how she wanted them. I have one colored one on my iPod but the others have to be uploaded grime the computer, mines broken so I can't just yet.
