After my last attempt, which was a little flat, I went out and got another speedlight, and trigger. Everytime I add something new to the mix, it feels like the first time.

I am also trying to decide if I like shots on white, or on black.

Shot with 1 flash below paper and one above. The below flash was set higher power than the above. The upper flash partially hit the white paper roof, and a reflector card in front. My lightbox is just a small folded paper box.

This was shot on glass, above black velvet. One flash directly down on the roof, the other firing in from the side, again partially hitting the paper box, and partially hitting a reflector card.

The making of the above ring. The tool is called a milgrain tool, which has little concave cups on a small wheel, you roll this wheel, pressing with all your might, to leave the beaded, millgrain impression.

All shot with Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro

Have you tried using a milk jug?

I am not being a smart ass, but, for what? For a light box, or difuser?

Also.... Why in the beginner section???

I prefer the second photo, as the first one comes off too hot for my liking.
Because of the reflections on the shiny ring, and it's overall light color in general, I think the contrast with a darker background works better.

Great work!

I think I prefer the second one. However I wish the reflection on the bottom wasn't there to distract my eye... Or the whole reflection were there...

The blue certainly looks better with black. Maybe increase the vibrant on the first one?

It might be because of the different angle, but I think the one with the black background shows better detail.
Just wondering, how is the ring standing? Is it just balanced or did you have something holding it and PP it out later?

It really pops on the black/glass. I'd like to try something like this but I don't have any jewelry (seriously).

I also prefer the black. But I like the third picture best. I think it would be cool to hang out with a craftsman and do a journalist style session of him/her working.

On black makes your subject to really pop, nice work Bitter!! I also prefer the angle on black also.

Another vote for black here. I hear that once you've gone in that direction, it's hard to ever go back.
