First Real Try at Horizontal Portraits

So, they really wanted the midfield logo on the background, the only way to really accomplish that was going to be landscape with the girls posing at the 1/3 left power line.

Thoughts?

Also, it drives me crazy how schools always want their outside portraits done at 5 PM. Like the worst possible light, either you've got harsh frontal light or intense shadows. ANd of course the portable batter powered strobes aren't really powerful enough to fully overpower.

The lighting here was sunlight coming directly at her, and an impact light to the picture's left side to somewhat alleviate shadows from the sun.

well, the only way to get that angle meant that the subject was about 5 feet from me and the field logo probably around 700 feet away. This was already at f/11. I don't even know that it would have been in focus at f/22, given the relative distances and needing a decent tele length for the compression effects.

FYI there is a distracting shadow running down the left side of her face that can easily be removed - but thats nit picking because its C and C =)

Yeah, I gotcha, no problem. It isn't real obvious, but this is essentially on a patio type thing that sort of hangs over the field. Thought about going wider, but wanted to keep her face nice and compressed, making her look pretty was probably #1.

And yeah, that shadow from her hair running across the left side of her face is just me bing lazy and not taking the time to remove it. I'm sure our image editors will remove it.

I would have copied and pasted a clip-art of their logo into a corner of the photo. At least then it would show up.

Such is the life of shooting for a company that is under a contract. If they ask for it this way, you fulfill those needs. If not, you find yourself fired pretty quick.

I can't envision a scenario wherein I would ever become a professional photographer.

On the other hand, I can envision myself offering suggestions to a client by way of educating the client as to what is possible and what is not.

Were you required to shoot the picture at this specific location? I would have found a shady spot, if allowable, that would have been more controllable.

It had to on or right next to the football field. The only shady spots had concession stands for backgrounds.

I think this is pretty nice considering the lighting you had to work with.
I might suggest darkening the uniform a fair amount so it doesn't compete with her face and darkening her face a tiny bit so it doesn't look as reflective as it does.

Nice shot. If they really wanted that logo showing it would have been nice if they repainted it or had the cheerleaders in front of a banner with the logo. The portrait looks more like a cheerleader and some grass but still looks fantastic.
