I just got my first 5 in 1 reflector and had to give it a quick tryout.

Reflector by Trever1t, on Flickr

0.001 sec (1/1600) Aperture f/2.8 Focal Length 95 mm ISO Speed 200 Exposure Bias 0 EV Flash No Flash

So, I see I could stop down a little to get more DOF and raise the reflector higher, to eye level of my subject to more evenly light the top of the face and hair.

any other thoughts?

I'm not positive, but I think the reflector being higher would also give a more flattering light to her face and not give so many shadows. :)

This was with the gold side. Maybe the white or silver might have been brighter? I didn't want to use a flash just yet, wanted to see how the reflector alone would light the subject. Do you that use reflectors use them in conjunction with a flash?

No offense but the lighting makes her look rather scary. :(

Looks like the reflector is a bit lower reflecting up, creating a flashlight "scary story" face...like misstwinklytoes says...it should be a bit higher.

yeah, that was my first self-critique. I need to get it up higher. In this shot I had her holding the reflector. I suppose I could tripod and use the timer, holding the reflector myself in the field.

thanks for the responses!

And the point of using bounced light is to expose for the background properly. your sky is still overexposed.

:lmao:

I am a newbie but as i can see there are slight un-equal shadows, I want to see more of your shots using reflector :sexywink:

Yes, I totally let that concept escape me, thank you!

Raise level of reflector to eliminate shadow., increasing light on subject.
Meter on sky (?)
Stop down for greater DOF

Sound about right?

What I know about using reflectors couldn't fill a thimble, but I would be leery of using the gold side of the reflector on someone with such a naturally dark complexion. Lots of times people in this situation can end up looking quite jaundiced

you know I was wondering about that. She already has a natural warm glow :D

I'll try the white and silver for comparison. ;)

Yeah, I think what's been covered sums it up. I think the biggest offense is that she looks like she's telling a ghost story by a campfire (which leads me to believe the Reflector is too low). This is just due to the direction of the light however. Play around and I'm sure you'll find a reflector position that is much more natural looking.
