First try, much to learn

Lots to learn about going Mono...

My first big try

To be honest, neither one really grabs me. They're both very contrasty, and leaning at odd angles as well as lacking a clearly defined subject. I think with a bit of work and another attempt or two, you could have some good images out of those scenes.

I like both of them. In the first, I would crop out the person walking in the background, and possibly crop in from the right also. I really like the the second shot, and I think the tree near the center has to be vertical, as it is, which means the rest of the scene must be at that angle, which adds interest for me. The contrast made me almost see it as a negative, in parts, and I find it a very interesting photo. Certainly not just a picture of birds in the park!

In regards the first one, I don't think you clearly know what you want to show here.
It is cropped in an almost pano aspect ratio but all there is in front of the statue is empty space.
Well, we know the statue isn't seeing that.
In the background, you've caught a live person walking into the margin.
I think this would have been a much stronger shot if the stature was at the right third staring into the margin and the person walking was at the other third walking away.That would provide a visual contrast between the stillness and emptiness of the staue and the movement and vitality of the unknown person.

I have never studied photography so it's great to learn from people in the know, about composition.

For the best and most complete help, I suggest you change your profile to allow editing.
Many subtleties in composition and/or editing can be easily shown but not at all easily explained with only words.

The advice I never got until I had wasted a lot of time is understand exactly what you are trying to show and then simplify your image so the viewer can't help but see teh important stuff.

The second shot is very interesting and strange in a good way. I sort of wish the people were not in it, though.
