First weekend with new lens

bought a new lens the other day, not entirely happy with it but i got it cheap enough, anyhow i went away for the weekend and took some shots , heres one, might upload some more later on.

i bought http://www.canon.com.au/products/cameras_lenses_accessories/standard_zoom_lenses/efs17-85mm.html

got it for $550 AUD which it retails for $1099
but i just cant seem to see any difference between it and the stock lens, as in picture quality or anything, i know it isnt an L series or anything , are my expectations too high?
